The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) reported that 59,786 inmates are currently enrolled in the National Identity Number (NIN) registration initiative.
NIN Enrollment Process for Inmates
The NIN registration is conducted in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and is part of efforts to integrate inmates into the national database. Currently, 59,786 out of 80,879 inmates have been captured. NCoS confirmed that mechanisms are in place to ensure the remaining inmates are registered.
NCoS's Response to Misleading Claims
NCoS refuted claims that NIN registration had not begun in any custodial centers, labeling them as false and misleading. "The attention of NCoS has been drawn to a media publication stating that the NIN registration exercise is yet to commence. This report misrepresents the actual state of affairs," the service stated.
Collaboration Between NCoS and NIMC
Earlier this January, NIMC granted NCoS the license to register all inmates for NIN. This initiative aims to prevent the exclusion of inmates from national development plans. "Inmates who have achieved higher education should not be excluded from the national development processes," said acting NCoS Controller General, Mr. Sylvester Nwakuche.
In conclusion, the NIN enrollment of inmates represents a significant step towards their integration into society and participation in national development initiatives.
