Amazon has announced plans to invest over $13 billion in the development of artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure in Australia by 2029.
Amazon's Investments in Australia
Amazon plans to invest 20 billion Australian dollars (approximately $13.4 billion) to expand its cloud services and AI technology in Australia. This will be the largest publicly announced technology investment by a global company in the country. The funds will be used to expand, operate, and maintain Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers.
Impact on Australia's Economy
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted that this significant investment will generate economic opportunities for Australians, including jobs and infrastructure to support complex AI and supercomputing applications. AI and automation-related developments are expected to contribute an annual $400 billion to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).
Company's Environmental Initiatives
Part of the investment will be used to build three new solar farms in Victoria and Queensland. These projects will increase Amazon's total renewable projects in Australia to 11 and are expected to generate approximately 1.4 million megawatt-hours of carbon-free energy per year, equivalent to powering about 290,000 Australian homes.
Amazon's investments in Australia's technological infrastructure create new opportunities for the country's economy and contribute to sustainable energy development.
