According to the Financial Times, more than 500 organizations have ramped up lobbying efforts regarding artificial intelligence policy in the U.S. in 2024.
Increase in AI Lobbyists
Since the beginning of the year, over 500 organizations have been actively lobbying Congress and the White House on AI policy. This number represents a twofold increase compared to 2023, when approximately 566 organizations engaged in AI-related advocacy.
Importance of Business and Government Collaboration
Tony Samp, head of AI policy at DLA Piper and lobbyist for OpenAI, states that the U.S. government is now seen as a key partner rather than a hindrance. He mentioned that the government can serve as a 'public validator of new technology approaches'.
Big Tech Initiatives and Regulatory Challenges
Major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are also lobbying, believing that AI could transform the economy. However, they face challenges, such as navigating antitrust regulations and responding to lawsuits regarding copyright.
The intensity of lobbying in the AI sector highlights the technology's significance for the U.S. economy and the need for appropriate regulation amidst global competition.
