The Australian Federal Police have launched an investigation into a significant cryptocurrency scam where fraudsters impersonated Binance representatives.
Investigation Begins
The Australian Federal Police (AFP), along with the National Anti-Scam Centre and Binance Australia, have initiated an investigation under Operation Firestorm. They revealed that more than 130 potential victims were targeted by the scammers.
Scammers' Modus Operandi
Scammers impersonated Binance representatives, sending fake warnings about breached Binance accounts. Using encrypted messaging platforms and SMS, they sent 'spoofed' messages appearing to be from Binance's official channels. Victims received fake verification codes and support numbers leading to the scammers, who then managed to access funds transferred to so-called 'trust wallets' actually controlled by the fraudsters.
Warnings and Security Measures
Authorities urge victims to report any incidents to their bank or crypto exchange and the police via ReportCyber. AFP Commander Cybercrime Operations Graeme Marshall emphasized close cooperation with partners to swiftly notify victims, helping protect their cryptocurrency accounts. Binance is also developing a new security feature to detect such phishing scams, though details remain scarce.
This investigation highlights the need for increased vigilance among cryptocurrency users and enhanced security measures.
