Spanish banking giant BBVA has started actively advising wealthy clients to allocate part of their investment portfolios to cryptocurrencies, indicating a shift in the approach towards digital assets.

BBVA Recommendations and Strategies

BBVA now recommends its clients allocate between 3% and 7% of their investment portfolio to cryptocurrencies, based on individual client risk profiles, focusing primarily on Bitcoin and Ethereum. This initiative was announced at the DigiAssets conference in London, where Philippe Meyer, head of digital and blockchain solutions at BBVA Switzerland, noted that more conservative investors would receive lower percentage recommendations.

Cryptocurrency Market and Institutional Investments

The recovery of the cryptocurrency market following significant downturns in 2022 has influenced institutional investor interest. The pro-cryptocurrency stance of former President Donald Trump's administration facilitated more clear regulatory conditions, encouraging institutional investments. However, most European banks continue to shy away from engaging with cryptocurrencies, with 95% of EU financial institutions limiting themselves to executing client purchase requests.

Pace of Change in the Banking Sector

BBVA's approach to cryptocurrency advisory signals a potential shift in how major financial institutions view digital assets. The bank focuses on established cryptocurrencies with solid market capitalizations while carefully approaching smaller, more volatile tokens. Meyer emphasized that the bank's recommendations form part of comprehensive wealth management strategies, minimizing the risk of losses in cases of market failure.

BBVA's choice to actively recommend cryptocurrency investments marks a significant milestone in the mainstream financial acceptance of digital assets. The bank's measured approach, which centers on established cryptocurrencies and controlled portfolio percentages, may serve as an example for other large financial institutions.
