Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, also known as CZ, will be released from custody on September 27, two days earlier than scheduled. The early release is in line with policies that allow inmates to leave early if their release date falls on a weekend.
Early Release
Changpeng Zhao has been in federal custody since April when he arrived in the U.S. from Dubai to begin serving a four-month sentence for failing to establish adequate anti-money laundering controls at his cryptocurrency exchange. CZ spent the first half of his term in a minimum-security federal prison in the California desert before being transferred to a halfway house in Long Beach.
CZ's Continued Presence in the Company
After his release, Changpeng Zhao is expected to be transported on a private jet, likely heading to Dubai or Paris, where his children with his former partner, Binance Senior Executive He Yi, reside. According to his plea agreement with the U.S. government, he is prohibited from daily operations at Binance but remains a majority shareholder and board member, holding significant influence within the company.
Philanthropic Plans After Release
Despite recent executive arrests and ongoing regulatory scrutiny, Zhao has expressed a desire to focus on philanthropy, including the Giggle Academy project for free educational materials for children worldwide. Additionally, the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee has signed off on a resolution concerning the release of Binance’s financial crimes compliance officer Tigran Gambaryan, who was arrested earlier this year in Nigeria.
