BNB Chain has announced enhancements to BNB Smart Chain (BSC) with the upcoming hard fork, Maxwell, scheduled for June 30, 2025. This update targets block time reduction and performance improvement.
Maxwell Upgrade and Its Goals
The Maxwell upgrade implements three key proposals: BEP-524, BEP-563, and BEP-564, aimed at enhancing the speed and reliability of BSC.
Benefits of the Upgrade
With the new update:
* Block time will be reduced from 1.5 seconds to 0.75 seconds. * Communication between validators will be improved. * Block synchronization between nodes will be accelerated.
These improvements will benefit all network participants, including users, developers, validators, and node operators.
History of BSC Block Time Reduction
The Maxwell update will follow the Lorentz hard fork, which previously decreased block time from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds. Lorentz also brought significant stability improvements, including:
* A decrease in reorganization frequency from an average of 5 per day to 2. * More consistent block finality across validators. * Reduced validator memory usage and block processing times.
Post-Maxwell, transactions on BSC will be nearly instantaneous. The updates will significantly enhance token swaps, NFT minting, and dApp interactions.
