Kevin Mirshahi, a well-known Canadian crypto influencer who vanished in June, has been found dead in Montreal. His discovered remains mark the end of a months-long search.
Disappearance and Discovery
Local media reported that a passerby discovered Mirshahi’s decomposing remains on October 30, ending a months-long search. He was reportedly abducted on June 21 along with three others from a Montreal condo. While his companions managed to escape, Mirshahi had remained missing until this recent discovery. An autopsy confirmed his identity.
Activities and Bans
Mirshahi was a prominent figure in Montreal’s cryptocurrency community and the founder of the investment firm 'Crypto Paradise Island.' However, his reputation was mixed, with accusations of scams against him. In 2021, Québec’s investment regulator, the AMF, banned him and two associates from acting as brokers or advisors and from posting crypto-related content online. These restrictions were renewed on July 4, shortly after his abduction.
Investigation and Arrests
In August, Montreal police reportedly arrested Joanie Lepage, who faces a first-degree murder charge in connection with Mirshahi’s death. However, authorities have not confirmed any links between her alleged involvement and Mirshahi’s cryptocurrency activities or potential financial motives.
This case highlights the growing threat of technology-driven investment fraud, with many cases tied to cryptocurrencies. North American regulators continue to investigate such activities to protect retail investors from fraud.
