The Cameroon court has ordered the unfreezing of MTN's bank accounts worth over $23m after a three-year legal battle.
Case Against MTN
Cameroonian authorities have been mandated to unfreeze MTN's accounts following a decision by the Doula Court of Appeal. The freeze was initiated by Bestinver in September 2022. MTN Cameroon stated that the court affirmed the legitimacy of their defense and restored their rights. Danpullo, owner of Bestinver, requested garnishee orders in response to a case in the South African High Court.
MTN's Satellite Communication
MTN South Africa, in collaboration with Lynk Global, made Africa's first satellite phone call. This was achieved through the use of LEO satellites, which provide coverage in underserved areas. The call was made in South Africa's Northwest province, showcasing MTN's capability to connect remote locations.
Next Steps
MTN and Lynk Global received approval from ICASA to use radio frequencies on the MTN-licensed spectrum. While further details on their next steps were not disclosed, this paves the way for expanded connectivity in rural areas.
The court's decision in Cameroon marks a significant moment for MTN, restoring fairness in the freezing of their accounts. Meanwhile, their innovative partnerships with Lynk Global demonstrate a commitment to improving connectivity in Africa.
