A Canadian woman has filed a lawsuit against Rogers Communications and Match Transact Inc. after losing a significant amount of Bitcoin to a SIM swap scam.
Loss of Bitcoin Due to Fraud
Raelene Vandenbosch, a pharmacy manager from Canada, claims she lost Bitcoin worth $531,000 in 2021 due to a SIM swap scam. The lost assets are now valued at around $1.8 million. In her lawsuit, Vandenbosch alleges that her personal information was given to a hacker by an employee at a mobile store, leading to the theft.
Court Ruling and Company Response
According to a ruling by the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the case will be addressed through private arbitration. The defendants, Rogers and Match, neither admitted nor denied the allegations but argued that the incident could be settled through arbitration.
Arbitration Agreements and B.C. Legislation
Vandenbosch is also contesting the need for arbitration, citing recent changes in B.C. legislation that prohibit cell phone companies from imposing such agreements. The judge noted that the new rules do not have retroactive effect.
This case highlights the importance of protecting personal information and consumer rights in the era of digital assets. Legal disputes and the repercussions of contract violations remain key issues in this context.
