Cannes Mayor David Lisnard announced plans to train local merchants on accepting cryptocurrency payments. This is part of the city's strategy to support Web3 and prepare for EthCC, which will take place in Cannes from June 30 to July 3, 2025.
Preparation for EthCC 2025
EthCC, Europe’s largest annual Ethereum event, is expected to draw over 6,500 registered participants, with total attendance projected to exceed 10,000. Lisnard sees the crypto initiative as an opportunity for local businesses to tap into a global audience and enhance Cannes’ reputation as a premier destination for major events.
Supporting Crypto Payments
The first training session is set for February 4 at the Palais des Festivals. It will cover technical, legal, accounting, and tax implications of adopting cryptocurrency. A 'crypto-friendly' merchant map will also be developed to guide EthCC attendees and tourists to businesses accepting digital currencies.
Political Aspects of the Initiative
Some speculate that supporting cryptocurrency may be part of Lisnard’s broader political strategy. He aims to bolster local commerce and tourism, which aligns with the global trend of interest in blockchain technology and digital assets.
Cannes' initiative to train merchants in accepting cryptocurrency is aimed at enhancing the city's reputation and local business support. It may also aid David Lisnard's political ambitions, including the 2027 French presidential election.
