The President of the Central African Republic, Faustion-Archange Touadera, announced the launch of a new memecoin, which raised doubts about the video's authenticity and the project's legitimacy.
Announcement and Memecoin Launch
The announcement about the new memecoin was posted on President Touadera’s official X account on February 9, 2025. The memecoin is described as an "experiment" for national development and enhancing the country's global presence. The token debuted on the Pump.fun platform and quickly reached a market capitalization of $530 million.
Doubts About Video Authenticity
Doubts about the authenticity of the video arose as AI deepfake detection tools gave conflicting results. Deepware flagged an 82% likelihood of the video being fake, whereas other tools like Avatrify did not detect any fake content. The community is divided, with some believing in the legitimacy of the launch and others suspecting the president’s account was hacked.
Further Doubts and Community Response
Cybersecurity experts also questioned the domain registration process for the token’s official site. It was noted that the car.meme domain was registered through Namecheap just three days before the announcement, which appears unusual for a government initiative. Moreover, the language of the tweet announcing the memecoin was exclusively in English, despite French being CAR’s official language. The account for the memecoin on X was later suspended amid criticism.
The launch of the new memecoin by CAR's president has sparked discussions and distrust due to questionable video aspects and domain registration, undermining community trust in the project.
