Microsoft has officially announced the closure of its Movies and TV store on Xbox and Windows. As of July 18, 2025, users can no longer purchase new movies or TV shows.
Closure of Movies and TV Store
Microsoft has ceased new entertainment content sales, including movies and TV shows, through the Microsoft Store on Windows and Xbox. Previously purchased content remains accessible, but new offerings will no longer be available. Microsoft confirmed that it will not offer refunds for previous purchases.
Support for Previously Purchased Content
Users will still be able to play previously purchased movies and TV shows via the 'Movies & TV' app on Windows or Xbox. Microsoft also stated that support for any playback issues will be provided. 'Downloads will be available on Windows in HD resolution,' the company noted.
Microsoft’s Competitors in the Market
In light of the store closure, Microsoft will now rely on external services like Amazon, Netflix, and Apple TV to provide content to users on Windows and Xbox. Netflix, one of the major competitors, reported strong financial results, increasing its net income by 46% for the recent reporting period. 'We are incredibly excited about the back half of this year,' Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told analysts, expressing confidence in the company's future.
The closure of Microsoft’s Movies and TV store marks significant changes in the company’s strategy and opens up new opportunities for competitors in the growing video streaming market.
