CoinMarketCap, one of the most popular cryptocurrency price tracking websites, has removed a popup that could lead to a phishing attack.

Incident on CoinMarketCap

On Friday, the platform confirmed the incident on its official X account, stating, 'We have removed the malicious code on our site.' The warning seemed to be a phishing attempt intended to make users connect their wallets and authorize the use of ERC-20 tokens.

User Reactions and Security Measures

Some cryptocurrency users on X cautioned that the popup attempted to steal personal information and private keys. One user, Auri, wrote that it requested to connect the wallet and approvals. CoinMarketCap acted quickly in response to the issue, stating, 'We know that a malicious popup asking users to verify wallet has been present on our site.' The update was made within three hours of the community reports.

Lessons for Cryptocurrency Users

Although the malicious code has been removed, the platform added that it continues its investigation. CoinMarketCap advised its users not to connect their wallets to any popup and promised to work on enhancing the site's safety. This incident serves as a lesson for every crypto user: stay alert, do not trust unknown popups, and ensure to check links on official sources before using your wallets.

Incidents like this emphasize the importance of cybersecurity in the cryptocurrency space and the need for critical approaches to suspicious requests.
