CoinMarketCap, a leading cryptocurrency price tracking platform, reported the removal of a malicious popup that raised concerns of a phishing attack.
Phishing Attempt Sparks Widespread Concern
The popup, which prompted users to connect their crypto wallets and approve token access, was flagged as a phishing attack. Users, such as @auri, noted that the interface resembled official prompts from well-known wallets like MetaMask and Phantom but aimed to steal private keys.
MetaMask and Phantom React Quickly
Both wallet extensions, MetaMask and Phantom, reacted quickly. Phantom displayed a red alert stating that the CoinMarketCap website was 'unsafe to use.'
Recurring Security Issues for CoinMarketCap
This incident is not the first security breach for CoinMarketCap. In October 2021, the site was hacked and over 3.1 million user email addresses were exposed and later found circulating on hacker forums.
Although the latest phishing attempt was swiftly neutralized, the recurrence of security threats raises concerns regarding platform trust and user data safety.
