Controversy Emanating from Matter Labs' Trademark Request for “ZK” in Cryptography and Ethereum Community's Reaction

Matter Labs ignited a controversy by attempting to trademark “ZK,” a prevalent term in cryptography representing zero knowledge proofs. Famed for zkSync, an Ethereum scaling solution, the company's move sparked worries about inhibiting innovation and constraining access to essential technologies in the crypto community.

The backlash from the community reiterated a strong dedication to openness, partnership, and decentralized principles in propelling technological advancements. It underscored the significance of maintaining unrestricted access to essential cryptographic tools for the well-being of all stakeholders in the ecosystem.

Response of the Ethereum Community to the “ZK” Trademark Issue

In light of Matter Labs' endeavor to trademark “ZK,” a pivotal term in cryptography, Ethereum community leaders like Vitalik Buterin and others took swift action. Their objective was to preserve critical terms for universal accessibility and shield them against monopolistic behavior. Influential individuals including Ilia Polosukhin, Hasu, Micah Zoltu, Pat Naji, Stani Kulechov, Lex Node, Haseeb Qureshi, and Pascal Cavarsaccio played instrumental roles in this collective effort.

Acknowledging the concerns expressed by the community, Matter Labs welcomed and valued the collaborative initiatives. Together, they proposed a solution involving the formation of an ownerless legal entity to manage trademarks for terms like “ZK,” ensuring accessibility for all. The proposal emphasized issuing free licenses to prevent any singular entity from monopolizing control. Advocating for transparency and trust, the initiative called for leadership by a neutral organization or consortium, endorsed by reputable community figures and organizations as guarantors of equity and inclusivity.

Matter Labs' Commitments to Transparency and Collaboration

In response to the scrutiny over their trademark application for “ZK” in cryptography, Matter Labs made substantial commitments. They pledged to refrain from initiating new trademark applications for “ZK” and agreed not to challenge rejections of such applications. Additionally, they committed not to enforce any current or future “ZK” trademarks they may possess, except for defensive purposes.

Furthermore, Matter Labs vowed financial support for the establishment of a community-driven entity tasked with overseeing trademarks for critical cryptographic terms. This financial aid underscores their allegiance to a decentralized approach in managing essential terminologies.

Lastly, the company announced intentions to promptly transfer all existing “ZK” trademarks to this new entity, relinquishing control to promote inclusivity and transparency within the community.

Matter Labs calls for participation from the Ethereum and “ZK” communities to aid in shaping and enacting this new framework. They encourage engagement and collaboration through their customer care link, with the goal of safeguarding crucial cryptocurrency terms from monopolization and fostering an environment of innovation and mutual support.
