The Paris prosecutor's office has initiated a criminal investigation against Platform X, accusing it of algorithmic manipulation and fraudulent data extraction.
Opening of Criminal Case Against X
According to the prosecutor’s office, the case was opened in response to two reports filed on January 12, one of which was made by MP Éric Bothorel. The investigation has been transferred to the Directorate General of the National Gendarmerie.
Accusations from French Authorities
The first report was made by MP Éric Bothorel, who claims that an extreme informational bias on Platform X was used to promote Elon Musk’s political views, potentially through algorithmic manipulation. The second report came from a confidential senior government official. The allegations focus on the alteration of the operation of an automated data processing system and fraudulent data extraction.
Regulatory Pressure on Platform X
This investigation occurs against the backdrop of increasing regulatory scrutiny from the European Union over major digital platforms, which also includes the opening of a case against X for non-compliance with the Digital Services Act. In this context, the future of X as an all-in-one financial platform becomes increasingly uncertain without approval from European regulators.
The Paris prosecutor's investigation may impact the future of Platform X and US-EU relations, highlighting increasing trade tensions and legal challenges for American tech giants in Europe.
