With increasing financial surveillance and tighter global regulations, the fight for digital privacy is becoming a key issue for crypto advocates. In a recent episode of the Clear Crypto Podcast, Peter Van Valkenburgh, executive director of Coin Center, described the current moment as a critical phase.

Crypto in Politics

Peter Van Valkenburgh emphasized that in the political atmosphere of the U.S., cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly relevant, but this process also leads to polarization of opinions. He noted:

CITE_W_A "The stakes in D.C. have gotten higher, not necessarily better."

According to him, the clear understanding of technology and its promotion face both support and sharp criticism, which questions the legitimacy of cryptocurrencies.

Regulation Limitations

Van Valkenburgh described Coin Center's narrow mission as defending the rights of developers and users to publish code and create decentralized networks. He stated:

CITE_NA "You should regulate those who are trusted in this space, but you should not overregulate those who are simply developing technology."

He warned that users' transactions are extremely at risk amid global financial surveillance regimes.

Culture and Privacy Technologies

Van Valkenburgh added that it is vital to develop privacy-enhancing technologies like zero-knowledge proofs.

CITE_W_A "Crypto... is our best hope of building a new internet and a new way of interacting online that's more personal and less depersonalized."

He emphasized that privacy issues exceed technical aspects and become a cultural issue.

Cryptocurrency continues to face challenges in the areas of regulation and privacy. Discussions such as those presented in the Clear Crypto Podcast highlight the importance of these issues for the future of the digital economy.
