This article covers recent events surrounding the attempted kidnapping of Australian crypto billionaire Tim Heath, as well as new cyber threats directed at Apple users.

Tim Heath's Kidnapping Attempt

Australian crypto billionaire Tim Heath was targeted in a kidnapping attempt in Estonia last year. According to court proceedings, he was ambushed by a seven-person team using forged documents and disguises. The incident occurred in July 2024 when two assailants posing as painters attacked Heath in his apartment building. During the struggle, Heath managed to bite off part of one attacker's finger, allowing him to escape to safety. The attackers, including former boxer Allahverdi Allahverdiyev, are currently being prosecuted.

New Threats for Apple Users

Cybersecurity firm Sentinel Labs has uncovered a hacking campaign targeting Apple users in the cryptocurrency sector. North Korean hackers are deploying Nim-based malware called NimDoor to steal sensitive data. The attackers impersonate trusted individuals on messaging apps and trick victims into downloading malicious files disguised as Zoom updates. This poses a serious threat to crypto companies and Mac users alike.

Investigation into DigitalMint

The US Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation into a former employee of DigitalMint, a firm that assists in negotiating with ransomware attackers. The individual is accused of striking unauthorized deals with cybercriminals and pocketing a portion of cryptocurrency from ransom payments. DigitalMint asserts that the investigation is focused solely on the ex-employee, as they cooperate fully with law enforcement in this matter, amid a declining trend in ransom payments by companies.

Recent events highlight the increasing risks faced by crypto investors and technology users, with rising threats from cybercriminals. It is crucial to maintain vigilance and employ reliable data protection measures.
