According to Binance's report, crypto platforms lost over $116 million to hacker attacks in September 2023. This exceeds the losses in August, making this month one of the worst-affected this year.
Major Crypto Hack Victims in September
The largest loss was suffered by the centralized exchange BingX, which lost over $44 million. Following that, the decentralized exchange PenPie lost $27 million due to a vulnerability in its reward system, while Indodax had over $21 million drained. The DeFi platform Delta Prime also lost nearly $6 million.
Exchange Response and Impact
Following the discovery of losses, many exchanges took steps to stabilize the situation. BingX announced a temporary halt in operations for 'wallet maintenance', later assuring users that refunds would be provided. A unique case involved Shezmu, which managed to recover some funds through on-chain negotiations with the hackers.
Global Crypto Exchange Losses in 2023
According to Binance's data, over $1.3 billion has been drained from crypto wallets since the start of 2023. The largest losses occurred in May, with about $360 million stolen, mainly due to the hack of the Japanese platform DMM Bitcoin. In July, WazirX, an Indian exchange, lost over $235 million.
The 2023 crypto exchange hacks highlight a growing vulnerability in the cybersecurity of the financial sector. Exchanges need to significantly strengthen their security measures to protect user assets and stabilize the market.
