In recent days, several crypto founders reported successfully stopping scam attempts by alleged North Korean hackers, who used fake Zoom calls to steal sensitive data.
Fraud Attempts Through Zoom Calls
Nick Bax, a member of the Security Alliance, stated that North Korean scammers have stolen millions from unsuspecting victims. They typically call their targets to offer meetings or partnerships but then send a message about sound problems and a link to a new call, which is actually a fake link leading to malware installation.
Stories of Leading Crypto Founders
Giulio Xiloyannis, co-founder of Mon Protocol, noted scammers tried to deceive him and the marketing director through a Zoom scheme. David Zhang, co-founder of Stably, reported being lured into a fake meeting via Google Meet. Melbin Thomas, founder of Devdock AI, also experienced an attempted hack and is taking steps to secure his data.
Countermeasures and International Warnings
On January 14, the US, Japan, and South Korea issued a joint warning about North Korean crypto hackers. Many think the Lazarus Group is behind significant cyberattacks, including Bybit and Ronin hacks. Blockchain security firm CertiK noted that Lazarus began moving crypto assets through mixers.
Crypto founders are taking measures to mitigate new scam schemes and are calling for strengthened international cooperation in combating cyberattacks.
