In Q2 2025, experts from SlowMist report an increase in fraudulent schemes in the cryptocurrency sector. While the technical methods of attacks have not changed, their psychological aspects are becoming more sophisticated.

Rise of Manipulative Attacks in the Crypto Sector

According to SlowMist's report, attack methods are becoming more psychologically manipulative. Lisa, the firm's head of operations, stated, "Attackers may not be using more complex technical methods, but their approaches are becoming increasingly elaborate." There is also a shift from on-chain attacks to off-chain strategies.

New Fraud Methods with Browser Extensions and Hardware Wallets

Among the new attack vectors are fake browser extensions masquerading as security plugins, intercepting downloaded files and replacing them with malicious software. Additionally, scammers have begun sending users compromised hardware wallets under the pretense of winning contests. The report mentions one user losing $6.5 million by purchasing a counterfeit wallet.

Social Engineering and WeChat Account Hacks

Social engineering mechanisms are also causing losses. For example, users reported issues revoking unauthorized authorizations occurring on fraudulent sites that resemble well-known services. In further attacks, it was established that on WeChat, attackers use the account recovery system to deceive contacts under the guise of the legitimate account owner.

The analysis of fraud methods in the cryptocurrency sector highlights the need for increased user awareness of new attack schemes. It is important to be vigilant and utilize only verified sources.
