Bhutan has begun integrating cryptocurrency payments into its tourism infrastructure with the aim of modernizing its economy and attracting a younger audience.
Integrating Crypto Payments in Tourism
During a panel discussion at Binance’s Crypto-Powered Tour in Bhutan, Damcho Rinzin, the director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, stated that the tourism sector has long struggled due to an outdated payment infrastructure. On May 7, Binance Pay partnered with local bank DK Bank to allow users to pay for their expenses in Bhutan using cryptocurrency.
A Welcoming Message for Tourists
Rinzin also presented the acceptance of cryptocurrency as a branding opportunity for the Himalayan kingdom, signaling that Bhutan is welcoming a different type of tourist, particularly younger visitors interested in sustainable and mindful tourism. He mentioned a goal of attracting 300,000 users annually, which could significantly boost the local economy.
Cryptocurrency and Bhutan's Identity
Chief Marketing Officer Carissa Nimah emphasized that the move to accept cryptocurrency aligns with Bhutan’s evolving identity, introducing a new category of travelers looking to utilize crypto payments. However, the adoption process is still developing, as many local merchants have yet to see customers using this payment option.
The integration of cryptocurrency payments in Bhutan represents a step towards modernizing the tourism infrastructure and attracting a new audience, though actual usage of such payment systems remains at an early stage.
