Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) has warned about a rising trend of cyberattacks aimed at crypto data platforms following recent breaches.
Attacks on CoinMarketCap and CoinTelegraph
Changpeng Zhao stated that "hackers are targeting information websites" and cautioned users regarding wallet connections. The attack on CoinMarketCap occurred on June 21 when users encountered a pop-up prompting them to "Verify Wallet," which turned out to be a phishing attempt. CoinMarketCap acknowledged the malicious notification on its site and confirmed that the harmful code was removed. As a result of the attack, 39 individuals were affected with total losses of approximately $18,570. CoinMarketCap also plans to reimburse those impacted by the hack.
Shift in Hacker Tactics
Both incidents with CoinMarketCap and CoinTelegraph illustrate a new trend where attackers are leveraging trusted news and data platforms, rather than directly targeting cryptocurrency exchanges.
Research Findings on Cybercrime
A recent study by TRM Labs revealed that phishing schemes and malware-based attacks accounted for 70% of the $2.2 billion stolen in crypto-related hacks in 2024. Another report from Cybernews highlighted a significant data breach that exposed over 16 billion login credentials, marking one of the largest collections of stolen data ever found.
The recent breaches emphasize the importance of enhancing security and vigilance among users of crypto platforms. As hackers evolve and change their strategies, new demands are placed on the protection of personal data and assets.
