Elon Musk on Saturday demanded that every US federal government employee provide a report of their actions over the past week. This request was agreed upon with Donald Trump.
New Requirements for Federal Employees
Following Elon Musk's tweet, a memo was issued by the Office of Personnel Management in Washington, requiring federal employees to report on five tasks they accomplished over the past week. Employees must submit reports by midnight on Monday, avoiding mention of classified information.
Public and Union Reactions
Although the request was officially sent by the Office of Personnel Management, it did not mention the threat of dismissals. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, promised to legally challenge such dismissals. He called the actions of Elon Musk and Donald Trump disrespectful to public servants.
Economic Consequences
Economists believe that these cuts could lead to the largest layoffs in US history. According to the White House, under the management of Elon Musk's D.O.G.E. group, tens of thousands of employees have already been fired or persuaded to leave. The total number of job losses is expected to exceed 100,000, but not reach 300,000.
Economists suggest that even if around 200,000 workers lose their jobs, it would reduce the US GDP by only 0.1%, which alone would not cause a recession.
