Ethereum's development team has initiated the launch of the Hoodi testnet to finalize testing for the Pectra upgrade.
Purpose of the Hoodi Testnet
The Hoodi testnet was created to address issues encountered during previous tests on the Holesky and Sepolia testnets. Configuration problems prevented correct finalization, prompting the need for a more reliable testing environment.
Key Enhancements in the Pectra Upgrade
The Pectra upgrade combines elements from the Prague and Electra proposals, including over 10 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). Key enhancements include the increase in data blobs from three to six, boosting network scalability and data availability. It also plans to reduce Layer 2 data availability costs, increase staking limits, and enhance smart contract capabilities.
Mainnet Deployment Timeline
Ethereum has scheduled Pectra testing on the Hoodi testnet for March 26. If testing is successful, the upgrade could be implemented on the mainnet by late April or early May 2025. However, if the deployment is delayed, further adjustments to Ethereum's technical roadmap and 'drop day' schedule may be necessary.
The Hoodi testnet plays a crucial role in preparing for the deployment of the Pectra upgrade on the Ethereum mainnet. Successful testing will enhance wallet functionality, smart contract support, and data availability.
