Ethereum is actively working on integrating zkEVM, promising to transform its layer 1. This initiative aims to increase the blockchain's speed and security amidst growing competition.
What is zkEVM and its Benefits
zkEVM is a module that Ethereum plans to integrate at layer 1. It allows validators to verify cryptographic proofs without re-executing transactions. "This system will allow Ethereum to verify blocks via three independent proofs, without re-executing any calculations," said Sophia Gold from the Ethereum Foundation. According to her, the system guarantees 128-bit security with proofs being less than 300 KiB.
Competition in the Blockchain Market
Ethereum faces significant competition from independent rollups and aggressive Layer 2 platforms like Solana. The main goal is to maintain its central position in the blockchain ecosystem. With the introduction of zkEVM, Ethereum aims to reduce its reliance on external solutions like Polygon and zkSync, achieving direct integration of ZK proofs into the core of the protocol.
Plans for zkEVM Implementation
Ethereum has set a goal to complete the integration of zkEVM within 12 months, by July 2026. The system is expected to verify 99% of blocks in less than 10 seconds. "We want to make Ethereum the world’s largest ZK application. The race is on, and zkVMs must deliver their proofs in real time by Devconnect in Argentina," Sophia Gold added.
The launch of zkEVM represents a key strategy for Ethereum in its quest for leadership in the rapidly evolving blockchain market, providing the necessary speed and scalability.
