Ethereum’s Purge Phase: Vitalik Buterin’s Next Steps

The next phase in Ethereum's evolution is focused on simplifying the protocol and reducing node resource demands by implementing history expiration through EIP-4444. This will help limit the amount of historical data stored on the network and improve efficiency.

EIP-4444 is paving the way for the Purge, which is a crucial component of Ethereum's strategy to streamline the network, decrease node storage needs, and simplify the protocol by eliminating outdated network history. This will significantly reduce Ethereum node hard disk space requirements, making the network more accessible to all users.

The introduction of EIP-6780 during the Dencun hard fork was a significant step in simplifying the Ethereum protocol by phasing out "SELFDESTRUCT" code functions, which improved security and increased block capacity. Buterin is optimistic about a new proposal that would completely remove the SELFDESTRUCT code, further advancing Ethereum's simplification goals and enhancing security.

The Purge initiative, focused on reducing historical data, aligns with Ethereum's objectives for simpler protocols and increased efficiency. By streamlining data storage and processing, node maintenance becomes easier, laying the foundation for a more scalable and secure Ethereum network.
