The European Commission has confirmed that the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Law will be implemented as scheduled, amid ongoing discussions between regulators and tech giants.
Response from the European Commission
The European Commission has made it clear that it will not delay the introduction of the AI Law, which was adopted earlier this year. Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier stated at a press briefing: 'There will be no stop the clock. There is no grace period. There is no pause.'
Introduction of the AI Law in the European Union
The AI Law will be the world's first comprehensive regulatory framework for artificial intelligence and was officially adopted following extensive discussions among the EU's 27 member states. It categorizes AI systems by risk level and imposes strict obligations based on that classification.
Impact of the New Law on the Industry
Several large companies, including Alphabet and Meta, have raised concerns that the new regulatory burdens could stifle innovation and unfairly penalize smaller players who lack the legal and financial resources for compliance. Some have even called for delays of several years.
Despite industry outcry, the European Commission remains steadfast in its position, asserting that the new AI Law aims to create a safe and regulated space for deploying AI technologies in Europe.
