The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that the North Korean Lazarus Group was behind the hack on the Bybit exchange, which resulted in a $1.5 billion theft.
FBI Confirmation and Crypto Industry Reaction
The FBI is urging exchanges and node operators to prevent the laundering of funds stolen in the attack. It identified 51 Ethereum addresses tied to the incident.
Operation and Asset Fixation
The attack is the largest in crypto industry history. Hackers moved over 135,000 ETH, converting some of the assets into Bitcoin and other virtual assets. Currently, 363,900 ETH remain unmoved, valued at over $855.6 million at the current Ethereum price.
Bybit's Response and Company's CEO Comments
Bybit CEO Ben Zhou urged the Web3 community to join the fight against the Lazarus Group. He also announced the launch of a site to combat Lazarus's money-laundering activities and offered the community the chance to become bounty hunters to trace the funds.
The involvement of the Lazarus Group in the Bybit hack and the subsequent steps taken by the FBI have prompted significant industry actions to combat money laundering and secure cryptographic data.
