Starting January 2025, Google will implement new requirements for crypto ad services in the UK, necessitating advertisers to register with the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
Changes in Google Policy
Google announced that beginning on January 15, 2025, advertisers offering crypto exchange services in the UK will be allowed to advertise if certain conditions are met. Ads for crypto exchanges and software wallets require registration with the FCA.
Compliance with Local Laws
Additionally, Google will permit ads for hardware wallets designed to store digital assets, like NFTs, provided they do not offer additional services. Google emphasizes advertisers’ obligation to comply with local regulations.
Combating Unauthorized Promotions
The update aligns with regulatory efforts in monitoring crypto ads. On Dec. 16, the FCA warned against the Solana-based project 'Retardio', citing the lack of company registration. Similar steps are taken by Nigeria’s SEC to regulate crypto promotions.
The changes highlight regulatory efforts to protect consumers and ensure transparency in the cryptosphere, requiring advertisers to comply with local regulatory standards.
