Mumbai's cyber police have arrested unidentified individuals for hacking into an advertising company's server and demanding ransom.
Data Theft and Ransom Demands
According to authorities, hackers stole a significant amount of company data and demanded a ransom of about Rs. 4.5 lakh (approximately $5,283) in Bitcoin. After accessing the server, they threatened to delete important files if the company did not comply.
Discovery of the Issue
The issue came to light on May 3, when the company's staff began encountering login issues on their servers. By using the 'forgot password' feature, hackers gained access and soon discovered that much data was missing. Third-party contractors found a note from hackers on the server.
Police Actions and Increasing Crypto-related Crimes
Following the complaint from Pranay Ramaiyaa, a 33-year-old employee, police registered a case against unknown suspects. They were charged under the Information Technology Act for computer-related offenses and extortion. Recent months have seen a rise in crimes related to digital assets, including ransom demands targeting high-profile entities.
This incident highlights the dangers companies face in the digital age and the need for enhanced security measures against cybercrime.
