Offshore hackers identifying as 'Waste' have stolen 62 billion Ugandan shillings from Uganda’s central bank, according to the New Vision newspaper.
Details of the Cyber Attack
According to New Vision, hackers based in Southeast Asia accessed the Bank of Uganda’s IT systems earlier this month and transferred the funds to Japan. The Bank of Uganda and police authorities have not yet commented on the matter.
Authorities' Response
New Vision reported that more than half of the stolen funds have been recovered. Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has ordered an investigation. Separately, the Daily Monitor noted possible insider involvement in the theft.
Freedom of Expression Issues in Uganda
Uganda has been in the news for social media censorship. Recently, two popular TikTokers were arrested for allegedly insulting members of the president’s family. Historical incidents like these often draw criticism from human rights groups.
The rise in cybercrimes and governmental actions against criticism on social media is increasing tension in Uganda.
