Ethereum has decided to end support for the Holesky testnet by September 2025 and introduce a new network, Hoodi, to address validator testing challenges.
Complications on Holesky and Its Future
Following the Pectra testnet activation, Holesky faced complications related to deposit contract configuration changes. These issues led to inactivity leaks, complicating testing of the complete validator lifecycle.
Introduction of Hoodi and Its Importance
Due to issues on Holesky, a new testnet called Hoodi has been introduced. It is designed to aid in validator testing and staking operations. Hoodi is set to replace Holesky, but the latter will remain operational until September 2025 to give developers sufficient transition time.
History of Ethereum Testnet Deprecation
Ethereum has already sunset testnets like Kiln, Ropsten, and Rinkeby in 2022. Goerli ceased operations in 2023. Sepolia is likely to remain active until 2026. The new Hoodi network is planned to conclude its existence in 2028.
The retirement of Holesky and the introduction of Hoodi demonstrate Ethereum's adaptation to evolving testing environment challenges, paving the way for new updates and enhancements.
