A controversy erupted in Hong Kong over a fake cryptocurrency supposedly connected to the city’s government.
Fake Claims of 'Hong Kong Coin' Launch
An X account under the name 'JohnLeeKa_Chiu' spread false claims about a national cryptocurrency launch on the Solana blockchain. These claims appeared on Thursday and were presented as an initiative for economic growth.
Official Government Response
Hong Kong authorities quickly debunked the claims about a cryptocurrency launch. A government spokesperson condemned the fraud and stressed the importance of vigilance. Johnny Ng Kit-chong also took to social media to warn about the fake information. 'Several citizens and Web3 practitioners have been asking me about someone pretending to be our Chief Executive,' he wrote. 'This is completely fake and a scam attempt.'
Similar Cases in Other Countries
A similar situation occurred in Morocco where impostors posed as Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch. A fake X account advertised a nonexistent cryptocurrency. There was also a scam involving a video using Elon Musk’s name, promising high investment returns.
These fraud cases highlight the need to be cautious and verify information from official sources, particularly in the rapidly evolving digital age.
