South Korean actress Hwang Jung-eum has come under scrutiny after admitting to embezzling a large sum of cryptocurrency from her own agency, causing a significant stir in the media.
Admission of Embezzlement and Court Proceedings
In a court appearance at Jeju District Court, Hwang Jung-eum admitted to misappropriating W4.34 billion (approximately $3 million) from her agency. She has been charged under the Aggravated Punishment for specific crimes in South Korea.
Media Reaction and Career Consequences
Following her admission, SBS Plus announced that footage of Hwang has been cut from the reality show ‘Because I’m Single’. In a public apology, she stated, “I sincerely apologize for causing concern. I made the investment in hopes of growing the company, but it was a hasty and immature decision.”
Discussion of Cryptocurrency Among Celebrities
Hwang's lawyer stated that the alleged funds actually belong to her since they are earnings from her work in the entertainment industry. However, company rules restrict her from owning cryptocurrencies. The lawyer remarked, “Since the company made money from her work, it really belongs to her.” Hwang plans to sell some of her crypto holdings to compensate for her liabilities.
The next hearing is scheduled for August this year. Despite these challenges, Hwang is making efforts to return to the entertainment industry while coping with a public divorce and the scandal surrounding her embezzlement case.
