According to a report by the International Monetary Fund, the government of El Salvador has not made any new Bitcoin purchases since February 2025. This information was presented in an official letter from the country's central bank.
IMF Report on Bitcoin in El Salvador
The International Monetary Fund published its first program report on July 15. It states that El Salvador's public sector Bitcoin holdings "have not changed," and that the addresses of hot and cold wallets have been handed over to the IMF for auditing and monitoring.
Discrepancies in Government Statements
The IMF report contradicts earlier claims made by President Nayib Bukele, who asserted that 1 BTC has been purchased daily since November 2022. Bukele also stated that the country's reserves amount to approximately 6,242 BTC, worth around $737 million.
Future of Bitcoin in El Salvador
Despite reaching a $1.4 billion loan agreement with the IMF, Bukele continues to assert that Bitcoin purchases will not stop. On social media, he mentioned that "even when the world ostracized us, these purchases didn't stop; they won't stop now or in the future."
Reports of the cessation of Bitcoin purchases by the government of El Salvador raise questions about transparency and the true state of cryptocurrency dealings in the country.
