Trade negotiations between India and the United States are moving forward. India's chief negotiator Rajesh Agrawal made this known at an event in New Delhi.
Progress in negotiations
Rajesh Agrawal expressed optimism about reaching a favorable agreement soon despite challenging circumstances. "We are making good progress, and even in these challenging times, I hope we can find our way to positive results sooner rather than later."
India's tariff proposals
India is offering significant reductions in import tariffs on several goods to counter the potential 26% tariff that President Trump may impose. However, the country insists that some tariffs must remain unchanged to protect sensitive sectors such as agriculture and dairy.
Maintaining high tariffs on agricultural goods
Indian trade officials maintain a firm stance on keeping high tariffs on key agricultural items like wheat and rice. India currently charges tariffs ranging from 70% to 80% on rice imported from the United States and between 30% to 60% on dairy products.
Trade negotiations between India and the U.S. continue to evolve, with both sides hopeful of reaching an agreement. However, key issues remain contentious.
