India has announced plans to release a national generative AI model by 2025 as part of efforts to strengthen its position in the global artificial intelligence race.
Launch of National AI Model
Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that India has acquired 18,693 GPUs, including 12,896 Nvidia H100s. The model will be tailored for the country's many languages and cultures. The country is also aiming for $20 billion in foreign investment in data centers over the next three years. Vaishnaw noted that there are at least six major developers who could create AI models within four to eight months.
Global AI Race Intensifies
The recent release of DeepSeek R1, an open-source model, has challenged many previous assumptions about AI, particularly regarding scaling. This has led to discussions on new export restrictions on high-performance AI chips produced by Nvidia.
US Response to Competition
The administration of Donald Trump has implemented three major export controls on Nvidia sales to China and announced the 'Stargate' project, a $500 billion initiative led by OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank to develop AI infrastructure in the US. Critics warn that tighter controls might reduce US competitiveness globally.
As the global competition in AI intensifies, governments are taking significant steps to lead this technological revolution, developing national AI solutions and regulating the export of high-tech components.
