French authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, over allegations of algorithm manipulation to facilitate foreign interference.
Allegations of Algorithm Manipulation
The Paris prosecutor's office has confirmed that the national gendarmerie's cybercrime unit will lead the investigation targeting both X as a corporate entity and unnamed individuals connected to the platform. The inquiry centers on potential offenses, including the 'alteration of the operation' of an automated data processing system and 'fraudulent extraction of data' reportedly conducted by an organized group.
Statements from French MPs
In February, two reports from the cybercrime section of the Paris prosecutor's office confirmed information regarding algorithm manipulation by the platform X. MP Éric Bothorel stated his concerns that this platform serves as a tool for distorting democratic conversations. He remarked that 'information bias, particularly strong on the X platform, serves Elon Musk's political interests.'
Investigations by European Authorities
The European Commission is also in communication with X regarding the situation. Some European lawmakers and the Polish government have called for an investigation into the new Grok update under existing online safety regulations. The Grok update has already faced criticism for disseminating hateful content and other undesirable materials.
The investigation into X raises significant questions about the influence of social media platforms on democracy and the need for regulation in the digital technology sector.
