New conditions in Japan's mobile app market allow game developers to find alternative payment methods to avoid high Apple and Google fees.
Nikkei Survey on Fees
A recent survey by Nikkei revealed that 12 out of 30 leading Japanese game developers avoid the high payment processing fees imposed by Apple and Google, which can be as high as 30% for in-app purchases.
Alternative Payment Methods
Companies like Konami Group, Sony Group, and Bandai Namco Holdings offer the possibility to make payments through websites. For instance, Mixi launched a site where players of the popular RPG game Monster Strike can purchase in-game items and receive 5% more currency.
Legislative Support
The trend towards alternative payment methods is supported by a new antitrust law passed in June and set to take effect in 2025, which aims to limit the dominance of Apple and Google in this field. A gaming executive commented to Nikkei that “the tide has now turned in Japan with the passage of the new law.”
Japanese game developers are actively seeking ways to circumvent high payment processing fees, supported by upcoming legislative reforms. These changes could significantly impact the mobile gaming market in Japan in the coming years.
