Jeju's Plans for NFT Tourist Cards
According to a report from the Maeil Business Newspaper on January 5, Jeju aims to issue digital tourism cards linked with NFTs in the second half of 2025. These cards will offer various perks, such as discounts and travel subsidies, to attract millennials and Generation Z.
Experience with Blockchain Technologies
Jeju has a history of crypto initiatives, such as launching a blockchain-based COVID-19 contact tracing app in 2021. In March 2024, island officials discussed further applications of blockchain and NFT technologies across various sectors, including tourism and fishing.
Surge in Interest in Cryptocurrencies in South Korea
By the end of 2024, the number of cryptocurrency users in South Korea reached 15.6 million, comprising about 30% of the population. NFT sales in 2024 totaled $8.83 billion, higher than in 2023, but significantly lower than the peak of $23.7 billion recorded in 2022.
Jeju's initiative to introduce NFT tourist cards highlights the growing interest in NFTs and blockchain technologies, potentially attracting new tourists and advancing the sector.
