Kansas is considering investing up to 10% of pension funds in Bitcoin ETFs through a proposal by Senator Craig Bowser.

Senator Bowser’s Proposal

Senator Craig Bowser introduced Senate Bill 34, which allows the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System to invest part of the retirement fund in Bitcoin ETFs. The bill proposes the establishment of a board of trustees to manage these investments.

Annual Review and Program Sustainability

The program includes the potential to increase the percentage of Bitcoin ETFs beyond 10%, keeping beneficiaries' interests in mind. An annual review of the investments will be conducted to assess sustainability and potential growth.

Legislative Steps Ahead

The bill, introduced on January 16, is with the Committee on Financial Institutions and Insurance. To become law, it has to pass several stages in both the Kansas Senate and House before being signed or rejected by the governor.

If the proposed bill is passed, it would be a significant step for Kansas and could set a precedent for other US states.
