Global cryptocurrency exchange Bitget announced its participation in India's Sahyog Portal, aimed at improving coordination among law enforcement and digital platforms.
About the Sahyog Portal
The Sahyog Portal was launched by India's Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It provides a centralized digital interface for law enforcement agencies to directly request user information and transaction records, which is crucial for cybercrime investigations and digital asset compliance.
Bitget's Participation in the Initiative
Bitget's joining the Sahyog portal allows Indian authorities to access the exchange's data under specific legal provisions, including Section 94 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act. Highlighting the significance of this move, Bitget’s Chief Legal Officer, Hon NG, stated: 'India’s regulatory and enforcement landscape around digital assets is evolving quickly, and aligning with initiatives like Sahyog highlights a practical step forward.'
Cybercrime in India
As of early 2023, over 45 cryptocurrency platforms have been onboarded to the Sahyog system, including major players like WazirX, KuCoin, and Bybit. Discussions are ongoing to integrate other top-tier exchanges, such as Binance, as India intensifies its efforts to combat crypto-enabled crimes. Recently, India's Central Bureau of Investigation dismantled a sophisticated transnational cybercrime network, confiscating over $327,000 worth of cryptocurrency.
Bitget's joining of the Sahyog portal underscores the importance of collaboration between cryptocurrency platforms and government authorities in combating cybercrime, a need that is becoming increasingly critical as digital assets grow in prominence.
