xAI, a prominent technology company, is facing a lawsuit from the Southern Environmental Law Center over the operation of gas turbines without necessary permits in Memphis.
Details of the Lawsuit
The Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) has filed a lawsuit against xAI, claiming that the company installed and operated at least 35 gas turbines without obtaining preconstruction or operating air permits.
SELC's report indicates that xAI could emit over 2,000 tons of nitrogen oxides (NOx) annually, exacerbating air pollution issues in the region.
Environmental Impact
Memphis is already recognized as having one of the worst air qualities in the nation. In 2024, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America designated Memphis as the asthma capital due to high rates of emergency room visits and asthma-related deaths.
SELC also stated that tests found formaldehyde emissions exceeding EPA limits.
Company Reactions and Measures
xAI representatives confirmed that they are currently demobilizing temporary gas turbines used to power servers prior to connecting to the power grid. However, about half of the operational turbines will remain until the connection is fully established.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson emphasized that the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence can bring both risks and potential benefits to society, calling for stricter pollution control measures.
The lawsuit against xAI highlights concerns over air pollution and the need for environmental compliance amidst technological growth and urbanization.
