Ledger has announced the discontinuation of software support for its Nano S hardware wallet. This decision is linked to the device's limitations, prompting users to consider upgrading.
Discontinuation of Updates for Nano S
Charles Guillemet, the Chief Technology Officer at Ledger, announced in a post that software updates for the Ledger Nano S hardware wallet will cease. Although the device was officially retired in 2022, limited updates had continued until recently. Ledger has now decided to completely discontinue support due to major hardware limitations.
Users Should Upgrade to Nano S Plus
Guillemet explained that the Nano S does not have enough memory to support new security features and multiple applications. Currently, apps like Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and others already occupy almost all memory on the device. Despite the end of support, users can continue using their Nano S for basic functions like sending, receiving, and swapping funds, but will not receive new security updates.
Security Issues and Company Plans
Meanwhile, Ledger is facing security scrutiny after confirming a brief compromise of its Discord server. A malicious actor exploited a moderator's account to post a fraudulent message urging users to verify their recovery phrases via a phishing link. The company has insisted that the incident was isolated and that security measures have been tightened. At the same time, Ledger hinted at a collaboration with the NFT collection Pudgy Penguins, sparking interest within the crypto community.
The discontinuation of updates for the Ledger Nano S underscores the company's commitment to focusing on newer devices that meet security requirements and innovations in an ever-evolving digital ecosystem.
