Xiaomi is facing negative reactions from buyers after announcing that deliveries of the new YU7 electric SUV could take up to a year.
Reasons for Customer Discontent
Customer dissatisfaction began after Xiaomi revealed that the delivery of the new YU7 electric vehicles could take up to 60 weeks.
The YU7 was launched on June 27, 2025, and attracted significant interest, garnering around 240,000 orders within the first 18 hours. However, the number of units available for immediate delivery was limited.
Customers have expressed frustration that they were not made aware of these extended delivery times until after completing their orders, at which point they had already made a non-refundable deposit of 5,000 yuan (approximately $698). More than 400 buyers have filed formal complaints on the consumer rights platform Black Cat.
Company's Response to the Situation
Xiaomi has not yet made an official comment regarding the delays. However, the company’s CEO, Lei Jun, announced on Weibo that he would address frequently asked questions about YU7 deliveries during a livestream event scheduled for Wednesday. Earlier this year, the company faced criticism over delays related to its other vehicle models.
Comparison with Competitors
The YU7 was positioned as a rival to Tesla's Model Y, which is currently the best-selling SUV in China. The base price of YU7 is 253,500 yuan (about $35,360), which is approximately 4% cheaper than Model Y. Despite the YU7's popularity, the delivery delays highlight discrepancies between Xiaomi’s marketing ambitions and its operational capabilities in the EV market.
The delivery delays of YU7 from Xiaomi are causing significant dissatisfaction among buyers, who are concerned about potential financial implications and unpredictable delivery timelines. This situation presents challenges for the company as it pursues its ambitious strategy in the electric vehicle market.
