MassJacker is a cryptojacking malware targeting piracy users by replacing crypto addresses. A CyberArk report reveals its mechanisms and impact on users.
The New Malware MassJacker
According to a March 10 report from CyberArk, MassJacker originates from the website pesktop.com, where users seek pirated software. After installation, the malware replaces crypto wallet addresses stored on the clipboard with attackers' addresses.
Threat Level and Activity
A total of 778,531 unique wallets were linked to the theft, although only 423 ever held assets. The total amount of stolen crypto is estimated at $336,700. One wallet holding over 600 Solana was notably active, conducting transactions and storing non-fungible tokens.
Other Forms of Crypto Malware
Crypto malware is not new, with attackers using increasingly sophisticated methods. Fake job offers are now part of the infection strategy. 'Clipper' attacks, which alter cryptocurrency addresses stored on clipboards, remain lesser-known but effective.
The research emphasizes the need for precautionary measures when dealing with software and managing cryptocurrencies. Users must remain aware of device security to avoid theft through methods like MassJacker.
