In May 2025, the crypto industry experienced a reduction in losses from hacks by 39.29% compared to April, with a total of 20 major incidents recorded.
Overall losses from hacks
According to blockchain security firm PeckShield, losses from crypto hacks in May 2025 amounted to approximately $244.1 million. This represents a significant decrease, considering higher figures were recorded in April.
Cetus Protocol exploit
The most notable incident was the hacking of Cetus Protocol, where $220 million was stolen. Network participants, including Sui validators and Cetus, managed to freeze $157 million, which is 71% of the total amount stolen.
Comparison with previous months
Despite the significant losses in May, these figures represent an improvement compared to earlier months in 2025, where total stolen cryptocurrencies exceeded $1.63 billion in the first quarter. In January, over $87 million was stolen, while February saw this figure surge to $1.53 billion.
Thus, May 2025 shows a positive trend in reducing losses from crypto hacks; however, the overall security level in the industry remains a concern.
