Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced the hiring of three researchers from OpenAI to work on the superintelligence project. This move follows accusations from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman of attempts to poach employees.
New Hires at Meta
Zuckerberg has recruited three researchers: Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, who previously worked at OpenAI's Zurich office. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the three employees left the company but did not provide further details.
Meta’s AI Strategy and Investments
Meta is actively revising its strategy and plans to invest up to $65 billion in AI infrastructure this year. Zuckerberg is assembling a team of specialists to focus on artificial general intelligence (AGI) following underperformance in the release of the Llama 4 model. The model did not meet internal benchmarks, particularly in mathematics and reasoning.
Competition for AI Talent
Companies like Meta and OpenAI are engaged in a fierce competition for top AI talent. Altman mentioned that Meta is offering substantial bonuses and high salaries to potential employees. Simultaneously, Zuckerberg is reaching out to numerous researchers and engineers in a bid to strengthen his team. The competition has reached a point where some researchers were surprised to receive messages from Zuckerberg.
By hiring researchers from OpenAI, Meta aims to enhance its position in the AI market, facing increasing competition from other tech giants.
